Flurry's analytics: Apple's App Store revenue still leading, but Amazon Appstore close behind

Not like we haven't seen this dog-and-pony show before, but Flurry's latest round of analytics -- which measured revenue of 11 million daily active users from mid-January through the end of February 2012 -- shows Amazon's Appstore pulling in a shocking amount of revenue given the short life that it has lived. Apple's strength in sales has been well documented, but the latest report shows that for every $1 generated in the iTunes App Store, $0.89 is being spent in the Amazon Appstore. Looking more broadly, the numbers show that just $0.23 are generated in the Google Play halls for every $1 spent in the App Store, but that's hardly a new phenomenon; the ease of sideloading (amongst other factors) has raised complaints from Android developers for years now. Flurry's conclusion is that Google's core strength simply isn't in running a store -- something it's about to do once more with Android slates -- while both Apple and Amazon excel in doing just that. Curiously, Windows Phone and BlackBerry were left off of this report, but we're hoping to see those cats thrown in the next 'go round. After all, RIM sure seems certain that its developers are making out just fine.

Windows 8 wallpaper available to download, Jupiter and Twin UI spotted

With Windows 8 milestone 3 now up for grabs for select Microsoft Connect partners, it's inevitable that leaked bits and pieces will start popping up around the Web. In fact, the first "official" wallpaper image from the still-brewing OS is already making the rounds.

As you can see, it's got a similar feel to the good ol' Windows 7 default background, but features a more subdued smattering of cerulean hues. Those of you who want to use the Windows 8 wallpaper on your current desktop can download it from our file dump.

A few other details have been revealed, too. According to ZDNet's source, the Windows 8 Jupiter libraries and Twin UI are starting to take shape -- though all that's been located thus far are "[various files] scattered throughout the OS" and the aptly-named twinui.dll.

Sony releases ICS beta ROM for Xperia Play, invites advanced devs to test games

Sony's been more transparent than most manufacturers in the way it's handled its Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich updates. It released a couple of early ICS builds for various 2011 Xperia phones over the past few months, and now the manufacturer has a fresh beta ROM prepared for yet another device -- the GSM Xperia Play. As Sony prepares to roll out the Play's ICS update, it wants advanced users to see how the phone's library of games holds up on the new version of Google's OS.

To get an early look at Ice Cream Sandwich on your Xperia Play, you'll need an unlocked device on the latest firmware, as well as an unlocked bootloader (check Sony Mobile's bootloader site). You'll then need to flash the new ROM onto your device using some command-line wizardry. After you're done, Sony wants to know what you think, and it's set up a thread over on the XDA forums to collect feedback from testers.

A word of warning, though -- Wifi connectivity is apparently not functional in this beta, and there are no Google apps included either, apparently due to licensing issues. The latter can be solved by finding, downloading and flashing the apps yourself, but the lack of Wifi will probably be a deal-breaker for many. That said, we expect enterprising Android hackers to have a workaround for that before too long.
